How a FIDE rating change is worked out
For each game, take your rating minus your opponent’s: the difference D. Table 8.1.2 turns D into your expected score PD, such as .64 against someone 106 points below you. Your result minus PD is the game’s ΔR. The change is the sum of the ΔR values times K, rounded once for the rating period, 0.5 away from zero. The example loaded first is FIDE’s own: 2212, K 40, nine games, +56.
- K factor: 40 for your first 30 games, and until the end of the year of your 18th birthday while you are under 2300; otherwise 20 under 2400, and 10 once your published rating has reached 2400. If K × games in the period would pass 700, K is lowered to fit.
- 400-point rule: in standard chess a difference over 400 counts as 400 for players below 2650; from 1 October 2025 players at 2650 and above use the real difference. In rapid and blitz it always counts as 400, and since 1 December 2024 games 600 or more apart are not rated if either player is above 2600.
- Leave out forfeits and games against unrated players.
History only: the edition in force since 1 March 2024 raised the rating floor from 1000 to 1400, changed first ratings and dropped the old limit of one 400-point upgrade per tournament.

Questions
How is a FIDE rating change calculated?
For every game FIDE reads your expected score from the rating difference and subtracts it from your result. The sum for the rating period, times your K factor, is the change, rounded to a whole number.
Which K factor do I have?
40 until you have 30 rated games, and 40 while you are under 2300 until the end of the year you turn 18. Otherwise 20 below 2400, and 10 once your published rating has reached 2400.
What is the 400-point rule?
In standard chess a rating difference of more than 400 counts as 400 for players rated below 2650; players rated 2650 and above use the real difference. In rapid and blitz the cap applies to everyone.
Why does my result differ from FIDE’s rating list?
FIDE rates all games of the rating period together, with the ratings published at its start, and the 700 rule may lower K. Enter every game of the period with those ratings.
